Wall tile is a different job from floor tile
People tend to price tile by the square foot and assume a wall costs the same as a floor. It does not, and the reason is that vertical tile has to be held while it sets, cut around outlets, switches and window returns, and — in a shower — installed over a waterproofing system that has to be right the first time.
A backsplash is the highest-impact small job in a kitchen. It is also the one where the layout decisions show most: where you start the first tile decides whether you end with a sliver against the upper cabinets or a clean run, and that call gets made before any adhesive goes on the wall.
Shower tile is where waterproofing lives. In this climate a pan or a wall system sealed cheaply will tell you about it within a couple of years, usually through the ceiling of the room below. A bonded membrane behind the tile is not an upgrade, and it is the line item we will not cut to hit a number.
Regrouting is worth naming separately, because it is often what someone actually needs. If the tile is sound and only the grout has gone dark or crumbly, removing and replacing the grout costs a fraction of retiling and buys years.

These are installed prices per square foot from Broward and Miami-area contractor pricing, covering labour and standard setting materials; the tile itself varies enormously and is quoted from your selection. Waterproofing for showers and wet areas is a separate line, always. Regrouting and tile removal are quoted per project — both depend far more on access and what is underneath than on area.
What we need to quote your tile work
Tile is quoted per area, and each area is its own line — a backsplash, a shower and a floor are three different jobs with three different rates. Give us the square footage separately and the estimate comes back itemized.

Where tile work gets decided
Kitchen backsplash
The highest-impact small job in a kitchen, and the one where layout shows most. Where the first tile starts decides whether you finish with a clean run or a sliver against the cabinets. We set the layout out and walk it with you before anything is stuck to the wall.
Shower and wet areas
Wall tile over a bonded waterproofing membrane, on a pan built to fall correctly. This is the part of the job that decides whether the bathroom is still sound in ten years, and it is the one place we will not take a cheaper specification to hit a number.
Regrouting
If the tile is sound and only the grout has gone dark, crumbly or cracked, replacing the grout costs a fraction of retiling and buys years. Worth asking about before assuming the whole surface has to come out — we will tell you honestly which one you are looking at.
Tile removal
Priced by what is underneath, not by area. Tile set in thinset directly on slab is a very different job from tile over backer board, and demolition can damage the substrate enough to need repair before the new floor goes down. We check before quoting.
Natural stone
Marble and travertine are porous, so they need sealing and they will etch from acidic cleaners regardless of what they are sealed with. Beautiful, and worth it if you know that going in. In a high-traffic wet area porcelain that looks like stone is often the more practical answer.

Frequently asked questions
- Can you just regrout instead of retiling?
- Often, yes — and it is worth asking before assuming the surface has to come out. If the tile is well bonded and only the grout has darkened or crumbled, removing and replacing the grout costs a fraction of retiling and buys years. If tiles sound hollow when tapped, the bond has failed and regrouting only postpones the real repair. We check that at the estimate.
- Do you waterproof behind shower tile?
- Always, and it is a separate line on the estimate so you can see it. A bonded membrane behind the wall tile and a properly built pan are what keep the water in the shower; grout and tile alone do not. In this climate a shower sealed cheaply typically announces itself within a couple of years, often through the ceiling below.
- Why does a backsplash cost more per foot than a floor?
- Because vertical tile has to be supported while it sets, cut around outlets, switches and window returns, and laid out so the run ends cleanly rather than on a sliver. There is far more cutting and layout per square foot than on an open floor, and that is labour rather than material.
- How long before I can use the shower?
- Grout and setting materials need cure time that genuinely cannot be rushed — usually a few days before the shower goes back into service, longer if natural stone has to be sealed. We build that into the schedule we give you in writing, rather than letting you discover it at the end.
